[Review] Diana Movie Review

Hello my lovelies,

Lady D has been a big icon in my life and she is by far one of the most beautiful ladies I have ever seen. I went as far as buying the tickets in advance for the movie, just because I was afraid I could not get a good seat. Despite the bad reviews I was hearing, I went to the theatres with hope up high to see the life of one of my idols.

This biographical drama directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, depicts the life of the late Queen of Hearts, the late Princess of Wales, Lady Diana Spencer. Focusing on last two years of her life after her divorce from Prince of Wales Prince Charles, this movie is based on the biography called “Diana: Her Last Love” written by Kate Snell. This story takes us in the whirlwind journey of the late princess’ life as she build her relationship with a Pakistani heart surgeon, Dr. Hasnat Khan. How they met in a hospital in London and how she conceals her identity to desperately live a normal life and how she managed to keep their love affair a secret. This romanticised version of a woman life also shows that what an amazing woman, this Queen of hearts was when she was alive. Her heart so huge that she could have given the world for the needy if she could. She was not just a pretty face with a privileged up bringing.

I was still far too young to remember what an amazing person the late Lady Diana was, but I vividly remember that I used to brush my hair every night wanting to be her. Her skin so smooth and her hair so perfect. When the news broke that she was in an accident, it broke me so badly that I felt like the fairy tale in my head just burst into oblivion.

Watching this movie made me so angry at first, feeling like it was really unfair for the writer to portray her as a bratty spoilt princess. But then I realised that, it was not the brattiness that the writer trying to get across but the innocence of the Lady.

About “Mr. Wonderful”, he might have been represented as a little too American rather than his real self or even a little British. Since this movie was based off a biography, it does seem that there are parts of this film that look a little too presumptuous and over done at some points.

Naomi Watts is an amazing actress and she has tremendous talent in portraying her characters, yet in this movie, it felt lifeless and a little boring. Not only she looks nothing like the late Princess, she also seems like she lacks poise and elegance. Although, from her other works that I have seen she not only could embody the character better, she could be just like her. I am not sure whether it was over doing the character or lack sensitivity for the direction, but in her character as Diana, she was not as good as she could have been.

As for Naveen Andrews, his portrayal of Dr. Hasnat Khan was just sad. I loved many of his TV series and other movies, but him, as Dr. Khan was very very sad indeed. Not only he seemed lost in his character, but also his accent made it worse.

Rather than making the late Lady Diana seems like a spoilt slutty little princess, the movie could have had the chance to be a very warm and moving love story. If only they had dug a little deeper and see the more moving side of the late princess as a person with humongous heart and a loving mother (she seemed like one in my opinion).

Although, there are some really good parts of this movie. The authenticity of the late princess wardrobe was very particular and very amazingly done. The cinematography is well above average; especially the opening scene when she was walking out from the hotel and also a few other more heart racing shots was fabulous. And what I love the most about this movie was it’s musical score. It’s just the constrained yet nonchalant sound was just perfect for the moments in the movie.

Was the good point enough for me? Not really. I do feel bad for the royal family as this movie might as well be burned rather than being filmed. Imagine the sadness that the two princes go through watching their mother being distaste because her innocence is being portrayed as silly, bratty and condescending. For that I’d give this movie a 1.5 out of 5 (1.5/5) stars.

Love and Kisses,

GWRL
